Whoever was not in the Church Hall on Friday, 14th September, missed a wonderful evening. We were extremely privileged to have local auctioneer Rupert Toovey put on such a great show – raconteur, auctioneer, appraiser of treasures. He held the audience of sixty in the palms of his hands. We are so grateful to Rupert for giving his time and expertise so generously to help with our tower appeal.
A wide variety of objects were brought along for Rupert to appraise – pictures, sculptures, china, books – including a wonderful old clockwork frog (“playworn”, as Rupert described it), an ivory snuffbox, a vase made from an First World War shell case. Most had stories to tell, and many items triggered off stories from Rupert.
The auction raised £1,180, and the whole evening resulted in a contribution of nearly £1,800 to ACTnow – Amberley Church Tower Appeal.
Many thanks to all who attended, who brought objects along, who provided auction lots, and who bought them. And, of course, to the other members of the ACTnow team who worked so hard to make this a great evening.
